Young people who took part in creating the exhibition

The voices of Middlesbrough’s young people will be heard loud and clear when the Olympic Torch Relay comes to town on Sunday (June 17).

The Flame will be stopping at the town’s Dorman Museum en route to the Evening Celebration event in Centre Square.

To mark the occasion local young people have been taking parking in Stories of the World, an innovative national project to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

This unique initiative is curated by the young people themselves, enabling their voices to be heard within museums.

As part of the project, they have explored the museum’s stores while developing their exhibition, an exploration of the travels of Captain James Cook.

The show - Pacific Journeys of Discovery: Entering New Worlds - challenges the traditional idea of display cases and dressing up boxes, adopting instead an approach more accessible to a younger audience.

Features include costumes made by Cleveland College of Art and Design students using traditional techniques of the Pacific nations, a Maori storytelling circle and house front created by teams from The Prince’s Trust, and The Rainbow Serpent, a mosaic made by Redcar Community College students.

A number of young people aged between 14-25, from different backgrounds and interests, have contributed to the project, from organisations including Redcar Community College, the Prince’s Trust, Teesside University and Cleveland College of Art and Design.

Rosemary Stubbs, a second year student at Teesside University who has been volunteering on the project since September last year, said: “What I enjoyed most about the project was the fact that we were a number of young people from different backgrounds, with different interests and different skills, which we brought together to create our exhibition.

“We have had our say and we have been heard, and it is now time for us to be able to share this exhibition with the public, and we specifically invite other young people to come to our exhibition, to judge for themselves whether we have achieved our ambition to present an exhibition which would be well received by other young people.

“Hopefully we have created a legacy founded on the wider involvement of young people within museums.”
