Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2017 under the directorship of Alistair Hudson. mima is in the centre of Middlesbrough, and is part of Teesside University. This year sees the consolidation of its new mission and programme, developed by Hudson with Senior Curators Miguel Amado and Elinor Morgan as well as the rest of the team.

mima has been transformed into a museum with a social function that repurposes art as a tool. It is taking a leading role in addressing current issues within politics, economics and culture, and its programmes promote creativity for everyone in ordinary life, exploring education, activism and making. The institution is acknowledged worldwide and in the UK for the ground-breaking route it is pursuing.

mima launches its spring programme with a series of exhibitions, collection displays, events and learning activities. Highlights include the first permanent presentation of the Middlesbrough Collection, housed by the institution

Middlesbrough Collection

As part of mima’s ten-year celebrations, 11 February 2017 sees the launch of a permanent presentation of the Middlesbrough Collection, housed by mima. This is the first time the institution has created a gallery dedicated to its holdings, and these displays are being shaped through a dialogue between its users, constituent groups, visitors and staff. The Middlesbrough Collection encompasses art and craft from the mid-1800s to the present day. Its strengths are post–Second World War British painting, American contemporary drawing, twentieth-century British ceramics, European contemporary jewellery, and international contemporary installation.
