Bottle of Notes to be lit up for International Women's Day

Middlesbrough's Bottle of Notes will be lit up in purple, white and green to mark International Women’s Day (IWD).

An event will take place at the Centre Square feature on Wednesday, March 8, from 5pm-9pm.

The colours the bottle will be lit up in are those used by the Women’s Social and Political Union, which was led by Emmeline Pankhurst and was one of the leading groups in the suffrage movement.

Recently the iconic town centre structure was lit up in red to mark World Aids Day.

The informal event for IWD will be introduced by Middlesbrough Council’s events officer Leanne Littlewood.

Local dignitaries from across Teesside will also be present and will be making speeches.

The IWD theme for 2017 is #BeBoldForChange which asks everyone – women, men and those who identify as non-binary – to help form a better working world, a more gender inclusive world.

Last year, organizations and individuals around the world supported the #PledgeForParity campaign and committed to help women and girls achieve their ambitions; challenge conscious and unconscious bias; call for gender-balanced leadership; value women and men's contributions equally; and create inclusive flexible cultures.

In a related event also for IWD, stories of sexism, sisterhood and struggle will be heard at Middlesbrough Central Library as part of national event.

Rebels in the Archives will be streamed live from the British Library on Wednesday, March 8 from 7pm.

• Rebels in the Archives - Stories of sexism, sisterhood and struggle will run from 7pm-8.45pm. The event is free but places must be reserved on 01642 729002.
