German rapper Chefket performs at myplace

German rapper Chefket entertained a capacity crowd at Middlesbrough's myplace youth centre.

The event was part of a UK tour to introduce young people to German music, culture and language as part of a Goethe-Institut project.

The rapper's songs engage young people with issues such as everyday school life, first love and their future.

Chefket's performance also gave his audience further inspiration to perform in public themselves as well as introducing them to German culture and language.

The workshop after the concert offered an insight into the life of a rapper and the art of rapping, as well as the roles of the entire band including what it is like to be a technician, singer or DJ.

myplace manager Tracey Smith said: "The young people of myplace have been working hard developing their musical understanding, technical skills and creative expression.

"The Chefket concert was a great night with more than 100 people attending, and they all gained an invaluable insight into what young people from different cultures enjoy.

"Seeing the live performance will inspire them to perform in front of an audience themselves, and they’ve also had a great introduction to the German culture and language."

"This whole experience has helped to improve their self-esteem, engagement and confidence."

The Goethe-Institut has been working with youth centres in the UK and looks forward to further collaboration with myplaces across the country.

Chefket's visit to Middlesbrough was part of a UK tour including dates in London, Ipswich, Hull and Whitby.
