children in middlesbrough receive the gift of reading

The National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough is making a series of generous book donations to ensure children across the town have a very merry Christmas.

The Middlesbrough Hub, known locally as Middlesbrough Reads, has recently benefited from a large donation of books from Penguin Random House to celebrate the National Literacy Trust’s charity of the year status. One of the many books included in the donation is festive title The Christmasaurus, written by popular children’s author Tom Fletcher.

The Christmasaurus is a story about a boy named William Trundle and a dinosaur; the Christmasaurus. They meet one Christmas Eve and embark on a magical adventure together, which includes friendship and families, sleigh bells and Santa, singing elves and even a flying reindeer.

Teaming up with the Middlesbrough Promise and Public Health South Tees, Middlesbrough Reads has donated several copies of The Christmasaurus to:
• Deserving primary schools across the town
• Young patients at James Cook University Hospital.

Thanks to the generosity of local partner WHSmith, a Christmasaurus cuddly toy has also been gifted to nine-year-old Marley Gill, who is spending time in the hospital this Christmas.

Marley’s mother, Rachel said:
“Marley likes to read and reading in hospital is helping to widen his vocabulary and keep his brain active.”

Allison Potter, Manager of the National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough, said:
“It’s a pleasure to give away so many copies of this magical story to Middlesbrough children this Christmas. Books have the power to transform lives, yet far too many children in our town are missing out on the chance to reach their full potential simply because they don’t have a book of their own at home. We hope that families across Middlesbrough will enjoy spending quality time reading The Christmasaurus together over the Christmas break.”
