Record numbers for Tees 10K and 3K event

Record numbers of more than 4,000 pounded the streets of Middlesbrough for Sunday’s SABIC Tees Pride 10k and 3k fun run – with Teessider Matty Hynes winning the big race.
Couch-potatoes and club runners, fundraisers and fitness fantatics of all ages and abilities combined to make it a special 10k event in the Teesside sunshine, while families and young runners enjoyed a best-ever 3k run.
First across the line in the 10k was 23-year-old Matty Hynes, from Linthorpe in Middlesbrough, won raced away from Ethiopian Yared Hagos in the final kilometre along Hall Drive.
Matty, the recent winner of the Harrogate and Billingham 10k runs, finished in 30 minutes 13 seconds, seven seconds ahead of Hagos, with Morpeth Harrier Peter Newton a further six seconds adrift.
An elated Matty, who only seriously took up the sport two years ago, said: “This is the most important race I’ve ever won. Living on the route of the run, this is the race I’ve always wanted to win, for sentimental reasons.
“I put on a bit of a spurt with a kilometre left and then just relaxed. Realising I was going to win in front of so many friends, family and the awesome Teesside public was a brilliant feeling.”
Sunderland runner Alyson Dixon, of Chester-le-Street AC, won the women’s race in a new course record of 33 mintes 34 seconds, more than a minute ahead of second-placed Rosie Smith of Durham City Harriers, with Josephine Stone of Middlesbrough Mandale Harriers finishing third.
Well-known faces taking part included former Boro stars Colin Cooper, Bernie Slaven and Mark Proctor, together with Colin’s wife Julie and children Annie and Daisey, helping the Finlay Cooper Fund raise funds for local children’s charities.
Proctor and Slaven were running the Tees Pride 10k for the first time, having previously run the London Marathon, Redcar Half Marathon and SABIC 5k Riverside Run together.
Riverside first team coach Proctor, who was sponsored by all the Boro players, said: “This was my first time for this run but it won’t be my last. It was a great atmosphere and the support of the Middlesbrough public was just brilliant.”
They were joined by BBC Breakfast business presenter Steph McGovern and Middlesbrough South MP Tom Blenkinsop, both running as part of a team representing Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation.
Foundation chairman Andy Preston, who gathered a group of nearly 40 runners for the event, said: “It was great to be part of something so communal. There was a lovely feeling to the event and it’s a great way to showcase the town.”
Middlesbrough father and daughter Stuart and Aimee Willmott, wore vest numbers 1984 and 2012, representing the years they represented Great Britain in Olympic swimming.
On behalf of the event’s Middlesbrough Council organisers, race director Jimmy Wattis said: “It was another excellent event with family, friends and Teessiders in general giving wonderful support to all those who turned out in force to enjoy the sunshine and give themselves a real challenge.
“It was particularly great to see so many smiling faces at the end from people who clearly felt a great sense of achievement at completing the 10k, no matter what their time.
“It was a brilliant day for charities and good causes too with many, many thousands of pounds raised so congratulations to everyone.”
The route of the SABIC Tees Pride 10k took in Acklam Road, Ladgate Lane, Marton Road, Marton Burn Road, Emerson Avenue, Green Lane, Acklam Road again and finally Hall Drive.
The events were kindly supported by Teesside chemical company SABIC, Middlesbrough-based Fabrick Housing Group and construction group Willmott Dixon.
Winner of the 3k fun run was 15-year-old Daniel Harbottle of Fairfield in Stockton, with Durham’s Joel Atkin, also 15, second and 13-year-old Matthew Crawford of Linthorpe third.
