Salute! Italian eaterie Al Forno will celebrate being voted Middlesbrough’s top restaurant with a champagne celebration for its customers.

Al Forno received the ‘Best Restaurant’ accolade in the prestigious Best Bar None Awards at Middlesbrough Town Hall this month.

To mark the occasion, a free glass of bubbly will be given to every customer at the Southfield Road restaurant’s new jazz night on Thursday October 4 when local band Jump the Queue will perform.

Owners Erdal ‘AJ’ Kuzgun and Liam Percy believe the award, which was voted for by TFM radio listeners, is tribute to their unwavering commitment to serving fresh, local food and offering a warm welcome.

“The personal touch is key for us,” said AJ. “What makes us successful is that we welcome back many of our regulars time and time again, so we thank all those customers who voted for us. That makes the award particularly special.

“Our motto is ‘fresh is best’. Working with our excellent suppliers, we are committed to ensuring all of our food is the very best quality, local and fresh.”

Liam added: “The award is a result not just for what we’ve achieved this year but through working with Middlesbrough Council’s business and environmental health staff over the last three or four years.

“It’s also an award for our first class staff. Our philosophy is to look after our staff and they will look after our business. Happy staff provide better service and that makes for happy customers.”

One of only three restaurants to have achieved Middlesbrough Council’s Best Bar None accreditation, Al Forno has joined a select group of independent venues providing the calorie count for each meal on its new healthier options menu. Weight-watchers are now able to enjoy meals from as little as 60 calories.

Councillor Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Community Protection, said: "Middlesbrough Council congratulates Al Forno on winning the Best Restaurant award. They are among the restaurants leading the way in helping to make Middlesbrough a safer and more attractive place for people to enjoy an evening out and it is only right that they should be recognised for their efforts.

"Not only have Al Forno achieved a five out of five rating for hygiene standards but, through the vote among radio listeners, they have won a public vote as Middlesbrough's best restaurant."
