The sculpture, 40000 Years of Modern Art, located outside fine dining restaurant Brasserie Hudson Quay  is by Bernard Carpenter. It is inspired by a number of things from humour to prehistoric art.

The artist said "I wanted the sculpture to be on the point of being recognisable so that people would want to read into it, in much the same way as people try to read shapes in clouds..."

It was installed in September 2005 with a budget of £30,000. Partners involved were Terrace Hill Group PLC, Tees Valley Regeneration, Commissions North and Arts Council England, North East.

Born in Malvern in 1975, Bernard Carpenter graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1999 with an MA in sculpture. In 2001, Benedict won the Jerwood Sculpture Prize. He lives and works in the UK, exhibiting internationally.
