By Transporter Bridge

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge has been a symbol of the area since it was opened in 1911. Middlesbrough is proud to celebrate its centenary in 2011. There are only two other Transporter Bridges still in existence in Britain. These bridges are at Newport (Gwent), opened 1906 and Warrington, opened 1916.

In December 1993, the bridge was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' highest honour, The Heritage Plaque, for engineering excellence. Its historical importance was also recognised in 1985 by its listing as a Grade II* Listed Building.

The Middlesbrough Transporter is a total of 851 feet (259.3 metres) in length, the largest of the Transporter Bridges operating worldwide.

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is fully operational and provides a regular quarter-hourly service between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence for 18 hours a day.

It provides a valuable public transport service, crossing the river in two minutes.

Middlesbrough railway station, which is managed by train operating company First TransPennine Express (FTPE), took the top prize in the category of the Best Medium Station and was awarded the overall prize of International Station of the Year at the International Station of the Year Awards (ISA). 

Stations are assessed on their appearance, integration links, customer focus and the staff commitment and pride in delivering a first class train service. Around 1.4m passengers use the station every year!

Most recently, in December 2011, First TransPenine Express has scooped the Network Rail Partnership Award at the National Railway Heritage Awards for work undertaken at Middlesbrough Station.

Middlesbrough railway station is a  Grade II listed building and has recently been subject to a £1.7m programme of improvements including the installation of customers lifts, the refurbishment of an award winning café and covered and heated waiting areas plus sheltered bicycle storage on the station concourse. It is open Monday-Saturday 06:20 - 00:30 Sunday 08:40 - 01:30

The station is served by a number of lines the Tees Valley Line from Bishop Auckland & Darlington to Saltburn, the Esk Valley Line to Whitby via Nunthorpe and Grosmont, the Durham Coast Line to Newcastle via Hartlepool and Sunderland, the North Trans-Pennine line to Manchester Airport via York and Leeds (operated by First TransPennine Express).

Monday to Saturdays there is an hourly service to Manchester Airport and every two hours on Sundays. First Transpennine also operate a once daily return service to Liverpool.

Platform Arts at Middlesbrough Railway Station

Platform Arts is a registered charity and provides affordable studio space for visual artists in the Tees Valley.

Platform Arts occupies newly constructed purpose built studios within Middlesbrough Railway Station, a Grade II listed building. Housed in the old British Rail Parcel Store and Fish Quay the latest addition to BOHO Middlesbrough's creative and cultural quarter is now open with 16 professional artists and craftspeople currently leasing studio spaces.

Artists within the new studios include contemporary painters, printmakers, sculptors and craftspeople.

Many of the self employed artists work on commissions and exhibit nationally and internationally whilst also facilitating community and educational projects both locally and nationally.
