The people of Middlesbrough are now used to their end-of-year customs including the fireworks on Bonfire Night, the town's reindeer parade and Civic decorations at Christmas and parties on New Year's Eve. But how were these occasions celebrated in the past? How did Middlesbrough observe the key events of Autumn and Winter? What traditions are unique to the area?

This talk with explore the way these well-known celebrations have changed over the years, drawing on the stories and experiences of Middlesbrough residents of two centuries. In particular, it will explore the ways these occasions were enjoyed publicly and were used to bring the people of the town together.
